Earlier blog entries explained how to
add Sharepoint Search to Windows Desktop Search and
add Sharepoint Search to Internet Explorer 7.0 Here are the instructions to add Sharepoint Search directly into Windows Vista Desktop.

- Click on Start Button
- Type Gpedit.msc, Group Policy Editor will open (Click Allow if prompted for elevated privileges)
- Navigate down and expand the following tree nodes: User Configuration - Administrative Templates - Windows Components - Instant Search
- Double Click "Custom Instant Search Internet Search Provider"
- Choose to "Enable"
- Enter :
Search MSWeb for String
http://msw/searchcenter/pages/search_results.aspx?s=Intranet&k=%w for URL - Click OK
- Close Group Policy Editor
- Reboot or run the following command in a command window as Administrator - Gpupdate /force
Option: You can choose to issue searches to your MySite instead of MSWeb. This can be done by performing using a search string such as
http://msw/searchcenter/pages/search_results.aspx?s=Intranet&k=%w&u=http://my/sites/mharriso
Replace URLs that reference you own machines.
Vista currently only supports a single search scope.

Based on feedback from customers and partners, Microsoft is pursuing the Department of Defense 5015.2 (Chapter 2) certification for Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007.
Microsoft is creating a Records Management Center Add-on Pack that will add the additional DoD 5015.2 required functionality to comply with and get certified with the Standard.
A confirmed test date of May 14, 2007 has been given ... once the certification is completed and MOSS 2007 is 'certified' it will be listed on the JITC product register at:
http://jitc.fhu.disa.mil/recmgt/register.htm .
The Department of Defense 5015.2 Standard was born out of several process improvement initiatives and business process reengineering efforts during the early 1990's conducted by the Department of Defense. These efforts were primarily directed at improving the preservation of official records in accordance with applicable Federal law. They were also responding to the potential loss of critical official records as a result of the growing reliance on PCs and laptop computers. The DoD 5015.2 STD is used by other countries like Denmark, South Africa and others as their Government standard.
Update Nov10: the
JITC-RMA test/eval schedule has been updated.

It has been confirmed that the out of the box maximum recommended document limit for SharePoint Server 2007 Search is 50 million documents in a single index, dependent on hardware.
SharePoint Server 2007 supports a maximum of 20 indexes. SharePoint Server 2007 for Search (Enterprise Edition and Standard Edition) supports one index only.
Note
- there is no technically enforced limit - this is the max number of documents that has been tested for
- size is irrelevant - a 10KB Word file and a 10MB Word file are each considered one document
- SharePoint Server 2007 for Search (Standard Edition) has an imposed limit of 500,000 documents
