Sometime ago Mark Bower explained
Searching SPS using Desktop Search.
Ive just come across a Registry hack to add a button to the UI (need to logoff/on).
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\DesktopSearch]
"PrimaryIntranetSearchScopeUrl"="Intranet,http://msweb/search.aspx?k=$w"
Save the text in a file with a .REG suffix and then invoke it. Note replace the name in green with your SharePoint machine name.
Update: If it doesnt work - make sure you are using the very latest version of WDS.
Microsoft is merging the Exchange and Real-Time Collaboration Groups to accelerate development and delivery of innovative business-communications solutions that provide rich, unified communication capabilities that integrate seamlessly with business applications and processes.

To enable customers migrate their sites from MCMS2002 to vNext, Microsoft will be releasing tools and perscriptive guidance to:
- migrate data
- convert templates to page layouts (see here)
- identify calls to the CMS API
In addition, Metalogix are developing a content migration solution for Office 12 that will enable organizations to efficiently migrate their content from existing Web CM systems (addressing both MCMS 2002 and alternative products).
Their solution will support taxonomy refactoring/creation, link and resource management.
We can expect a beta release soon after the public beta 2 release of Office 12.
I propose to host a webcast to demonstrate Migration Manager 3.0 for Office 12 as soon as possible after beta 2 arrives and the non disclosure constraints are removed. I will post details of the webcast later.

As part of MCMS vNext becoming a component within O12 Server, there has been a need to change the name of some of the core entities to be consistent with the SharePoint technologies.
Here are the new names to learn :
- Posting -> Page (see below)
- Channel -> Site (see below)
- Template -> Page Layout + MasterPage
- Template Definition -> Content Type
- Placeholder -> Field Control
- Placeholder Definition -> Column Templates
- Channel Structure / Top Level Channel -> Site Collection
- Template Gallery -> Master Page Gallery
- Resource Gallery -> Image Library ; Document Library
- Resources -> Images in the Image Library; Documents in the Document Library
- Site Manager -> Site Manager Tool (now web based !)
With MCMS / SharePoint today we have three types of containers - MCMS Channels / SPS Areas / WSS workspaces. vNext will introduce a single new container (a Site) that provides a superset of all existing functionality.
An MCMS web page (previously a posting) will be stored as a WSS list item (in a list called Pages). The MCMS placeholder content will be stored in the columns in the WSS list item. By storing the MCMS content within a WSS List, we can have same consistent workflow / metadata / versioning / checkin-out that SharePoint utilises.

http://blogs.msdn.com/sharepoint/ where the SharePoint team are sharing the thought process behind the goals of the next release of SharePoint technologies.
For the Office 12 wave, we are investing on top of the WSS platform in six solution areas:
- Collaboration ... richer calendars, surveys, discussions and e-mail integration, blogs, wikis, RSS, offline (in Outlook and Groove), basic project management (with Project Server for larger projects), tracking applications (including Access integration), etc.
- Portal ... published portals built on the new MCMS integration, declarative LOB integration from web services, database and 3rd-party applications like SAP and enhanced MySites with aggregation, personalization and social networking
- Search ... improved user experience, relevance, administration and programmability and rich support for finding people and business data with a consistent experience across WSS and SPS.
- Business Process ... server-based XML forms designed with InfoPath and rendered in either web browsers or the rich InfoPath client integrated with SharePoint including the new workflow capabilities with web, graphical and Visual Studio-based customization
- Business Intelligence ... business intelligence portals with dashboards, KPIs, SQL Analysis Reporting Services integration and Excel capabilities on the server combining the flexibility of the spreadsheet with the power of server-based deployment and rendering
- Content Management ... integrated document, records and web content management including workflow, metadata, security, policies, template publishing, etc. and upgrade from MCMS 2002 to an integrated SPS / MCMS (more - Arpan).

It was a year ago I discussed competitors spreading FUD and We can now see how content management is an important component in Office 12 and so why it was never appropriate to talk about the plans for Microsoft Content Management in isolation. So hopefully no more FUD!!

Corel has stated that they will support the
new XML formats in Wordperfect once we release Office '12'. We've already seen other applications like OpenOffice and Apple's TextEdit support the XML formats that we built in Office 2003. Now as we start providing the documentation around the new formats and move through
Ecma we'll see more and more people come on board and support these new formats.

Microsoft have announced a suite of new and updated tools to help organizations analyze their Notes/Domino application environment and move important application data to Microsoft's collaboration platform. These tools, which will be available for free download and include:

Further to my post on the release of
Retention Server ... a very timely article:
Clarke: 'There'll be no U-turn on data retention'The data retention directive that the UK, Ireland and Sweden pushed into EU law last month means telecommunications companies and ISPs will have to save information about customers' phone calls and electronic communications for up to two years.
Last year I mentioned Compliance Server - a free Records management Server solution for SharePoint. Its now been released and rebadged as
80-20 Retention Server.
For organizations using Microsoft SharePoint that need to manage the retention lifecycle of electronic documents and email, 80-20 Retention Server is a
free enterprise software solution that automates the retention process by applying information retention policies as part of everyday business processes.
80-20 Retention Server enables organizations to index, link, store, search, access and ultimately disposes of records stored in SharePoint over their complete lifecycle.
One major change driven by my beta feedback is that they have added a protocol handler so that SharePoint Search can find items in the Retention Server repository.

I'm looking for existing MCMS customer(s) that wants to work with Microsoft to migrate to the vNext platform and participate in PR/case study.
Some Microsoft resources will be available but there is no blank check ... the ideal customer would be one that is interested enough in quickly moving to the new O12 platform to potentially co-invest in the migration.

Back in November I mentioned the Microsoft acquisition of FolderShare.
FolderShare allows you to create a private peer-to-peer network that will help you to synchronize files across multiple devices and access or share files with colleagues and friends. You no longer need to send large files via email, burn them to CDs/DVDs and mail them, or upload them to a website. FolderShare allows you to share and sync important information instantly with anyone you invite, making it the perfect solution for personal or small business use.
FolderShare is now free of charge.

IronPython 1.0 Beta 1 is out now! IronPython is the code name of the early pre-alpha preview release of the new implementation running on .NET of the Python programming language. It supports an interactive interpreter with fully dynamic compilation. It is well integrated with the rest of the framework and makes all .NET libraries easily available to Python programmers.
News.com reports ...
Microsoft's support for Python could help the software giant attract Unix developers to the Windows platform, as it is a commonly used scripting language on the Unix platform, according to Salim Fadhley, who develops Python programs for Unix. "If Microsoft embraces Python, it could be a big draw for Unix hackers ... if our favorite language was supported as a first-tier language by a major software vendor, it would be a major draw to Windows. At the moment, most Python developers hack on Mac and Linux," Fadhley said. "IronPython could be a massive landgrab by Microsoft into the domain of traditional Unix scripting".
