UK National Health Service - MOSS Web CM

You dont get any bigger than this - the UK National Health Service go live on MOSS 2007 Web CM :

http://www.nhs.uk/

The new portal aims to empower the public to make better use of NHS services.

All content management capabilities and content searching is provided by Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. The site provides geographic location of local NHS services using Microsoft Virtual Earth (http://www.nhs.uk/ServiceDirectories)

This first phase of the site, conforms to WCAG 1.0 AA (and in parts to AAA), they are going through some refinements to make it AAA compliant throughout. New and enhanced information services are being developed and will be available later in the year.

The delivery of the site involved LBi, Dr. Foster Intelligence, Department of Health and various technology partners.

"You dont get any bigger than this" - please define "bigger" ;)

    Big Bunisess with WebCMS?

Swiss Air is a superb site ! Good example of multi-lingual MOSS Web CM.

How big is the NHS Site? The current site receives on average 2 million page views an hour ... they are ready to cater for triple this when the site goes fully live.

I'd be interested to hear lessons learnt on AAA compliance. This is still a big issue in MOSS when working with public sector orgs in UK, I'm suprised this one made it. I've had personal experience of MOSS being removed immediately from public sector proposals without even considering its other merits. It also makes an easy line of 'attack' for advocates of competing products when pitching to what is often a non-technical decision maker. This needs to be addressed in O14.

Our "switched on" partners are able to build/deploy compliant sites. However, we recognise that we need to make this easier for everyone and so working on this right now for some deliverables later this year. yes - its high on the agenda for O14 ... but things around accessibility get a lot more pragmatic with the next version WCAG v2 which will appear in the O14 timeline.

Riaz LBi shared the accessibility learnings at a recent user group meeting.
